Residential Construction Finding the Right Builder
Building a home can be a demanding process, and working with an unqualified builder can be exasperating, to say the least. By taking the time to ensure that you choose a builder who meets certain standards, you can save yourself a lot of headaches--both during and after the construction process.
Before choosing a builder, be sure to ask the following:
- Does the builder maintain a permanent business address?
- Does the builder carry insurance to protect you from claims due to property damage or on-site injuries?
- Does the builder maintain an established business presence in the community?
- Does the builder have a trustworthy reputation (i.e., are others in the industry aware of the builder and do they speak well of that builder)?
- Has the builder supplied you with a direct phone number through which you can reach them quickly and conveniently?
- Has the builder supplied you with a long list of references and permitted you to call anyone on that list?
- Does the builder offer a warranty? If so, how long does it last? What does it cover?
- Are there any complaints about the builder filed with the Better Business Bureau?
- Does the builder respond promptly to your inquiries and answer them in full?
- Has the builder explained how services will be handled after the sale?
- Has the builder provided a thorough, clearly written contract?
- Does the builder incorporate energy-saving features, such as the use of efficient heat pump systems, into new homes?
